If you’re looking for durability in a tile, then natural stone has a lot going for it. Take marble tiles – they are cut from natural stone deposits that are millions of years old. They are bound to last a decade or two in your home with the right care.
Marble tiles are not as versatile as other tiles – for example, granite. Marble is actually relatively soft when compared to other materials such as granite, and it can scratch fairly easily. Marble, like most natural stone tiles, is also quite sensitive to acidic chemicals such as wine, fruit juices and chemicals. However, with the right sealants, marble can be used in many different areas of the home.
Whilst the traditional use for marble is to produce magnificent tiled floors, it can also be used on kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, on walls and even as columns, statues and garden/home ornaments. Marble is easily maintained, requiring little more than a regular mop with mild detergent and water, regular vacuuming, and resealing every year or two.
What strikes most people is the varied range of patterns and the multitude of colors. Marble is often highlighted by veining with veins a different color to the surrounding marble. This makes each tile unique – you don’t have to match up patterns like some tiles to get a great finish.
