Renovating your bathroom is an excellent home improvement project, especially since it can have a significant effect on your home’s overall value. One of the more important decisions you have to make relates to flooring. With all the available materials, such as ceramic tile flooring, hardwood, and laminate, how do you know which option is best for your home? Here are some important advantages to choosing ceramic tile for your bathroom.

Large Selection of Colors and Styles
Ceramic tiles come in a wide variety of colors, styles, shapes, sizes, and textures. Choose white square tiles for a classic look that never goes out of style. If you’d prefer something more unique, choose textured tiles in shades of gray or brown. You can create a subtle floor that serves as a backdrop for custom cabinets and fixtures or choose stunning tiles that make an eye-catching statement.

Durable and Easy to Clean
Ceramic tile flooring is well-suited to a bathroom environment. It is extremely durable, resisting scratches and providing a strong surface that lasts for decades. Tile won’t warp due to water or humidity, and it doesn’t react to drastic temperature changes. Eco Depot Ceramic tiles are also extremely safe, due to our unique non-slip treatment. We use a combination of adhesives and integrated grooves to prevent our tiles from becoming slick and slippery.

You’ve selected your new tiles for your remodeling project, but you also need supplies to install those surfaces. At Eco-Depot, we carry Mapei mortars, grouts, and adhesives because of their high-quality results and environmentally friendly ratings.

Use Ceramic Mortars
Mortar holds the tiles firmly in place. When installed correctly, tiles remain flat and do not slip or break loose.

An excellent mortar has the following desirable properties:
•Mixes easily – The powder does not clump in water when prepared
•Long Pot Life – Remains useable throughout a working day
•Retains Form – Cures evenly without distorting
•Adaptable – Useful in different temperatures
•Durable – Resistant to humidity and climate changes

Mapei’s Ceramic Tile mortar is a polymer enriched thin-set mortar. When kept dry, the powders have a lengthy shelf life so you can use them on projects whenever you are ready. Mix it with water to prepare the mortar for application.

It spreads quickly and smoothly over flat surfaces without leaving clumps. When you lay your tiles on combed mortar, the mixture spreads evenly over tile surfaces to create a secure application. It is resistant to slipping and has a shear strength of 200 psi. It cures in about 24 hours and is ready for grouting the next day.

Select the Proper Grout
Grout seals the tiles and protects against moisture damage. It goes down in between the spaces in the tiles and prevents moisture from undermining the floor. Grout also locks the tiles in place.

Mapei has several grout options we like to use:
• Professional Salto Tile Grout – A mix of Portland cement and silica suitable for terracotta ceramics
• Keracolor™ U – premium sanded grout for joints narrower than 1/8th inch
• Keracolor S – Premium sanded grout with polymers suitable for joints wider than 1/8th inch
• Ultracolor® Plus – Premium rapid-set sanded grout
• Ultracolor® Plus FA – All-Purpose rapid setting grout

These high-quality grouts lay evenly between the tiles to seal your floors and protect the sublayers from water damage and erosion.

Finish Up With Caulk
While grout is a robust and brittle surface, caulks are softer and malleable. It’s made entirely of polymers, like rubber or latex, and these adhesives move and stretch. They are easier to apply to corners and areas where joints meet. Mapei has several options suitable for different projects. Keracaulk™ S, Keracaulk ™ U, and Mapesil™ T caulks fully seal against water intrusion in hard to reach areas.

If you’re like most homeowners, you probably watch those DIY shows on TV and think to yourself that Ceramic-tile-flooringthere’s no way that you could make your home look as good as they do on your own. Yet you’d be surprised at how easily your own home and kitchen renovations can turn your space into one worthy of any design show. All you need are the right materials and just a little bit of know-how.

Many choose to begin their remodeling projects in the kitchen because that space is the epicenter of action in your home. When considering where to begin your kitchen remodel, just take a look down at your feet. Your kitchen flooring should dictate all other aspects of your renovation. Now the only question is what flooring material to use: hardwood or tile?

The Advantages of Tile Flooring

Hardwood has dominated the kitchen flooring market for many years due to its ease of installation and its relatively low costs. Yet ceramic and porcelain tiles have slowly begun to make their presence felt on local kitchen floors. While installing tile on your kitchen floor may cost a little extra up-front, the overall advantages may make it well worth the expense. Some of these advantages include:

•A greater selection of design options
•Added durability
•A better heat conductor for radiant heat systems
•A great compliment to a tile backsplash

While hardwood may be less expensive, consider that you’ll most likely need to refinish your floors every 10 years if you go with this option. Plus, it isn’t waterproof, so small spills can create big problems. Tile, on the other hand, is nearly indestructible, offering your subflooring protection from spills and leaks.

Hiding somewhere inside of your bland old kitchen is an ultra-modern and fabulously-looking cooking and entertaining space just waiting to be found.
